**Dr. Byron Chandler

Class of 1960
Colleges: Westchester State, Bloomsburg State and Syracuse University
- Dr. Chandler was an outstanding swimmer in high school at Hazelton, as well as in college when he was chosen team co-captain his senior year.
- Upon his arrival to Wellsville in 2000 as School Superintendent, he quickly left his mark on the athletic program. In a short time he did more for athletics than any previous leader had done in the past 75 years.
- While the academic preparation of students was always the main focus, he never lost sight of the impact athletics can have on students.
- These are all things that happened during his watch: new swimming pool, new tennis courts, major renovations to the high school gym, a state of the art track and field facility, artificial turf football and soccer field, a press box, and conversion of the high school lower gym into a Fitness Center equal to most colleges.
- His goal was to stay in Wellsville for three years. He stayed 10 and because of his vision, thousands of lives will be touched for years to come.
Brian Gray

- Played football and wrestling for two years at St. Cloud State College
- Coached wrestling at Wellsville for 34 years, from Youth Wrestling to Modified, J.V., and was the Varsity coach for 14 years.
- Coached several sports at the community level including: Minor League Baseball (9 yrs.), Little League Baseball (3 yrs.), Babe Ruth (6 yrs.), Cinderella Softball (6 yrs.) & Midget Football (17 yrs.)
- He was one of the original members of the Old Timers Wrestling Club (6 yrs.) where he only lost one match.
- In weightlifting from 1992-2002 he was the ADFPA NY Champion as well as the National Masters Bench Press Champion for seven years.
Rich Hetzel

- Recognized for his leadership qualities as he was selected captain of football, basketball, and baseball his senior year
- Chosen as the Olean Times Herald M.V.P. in basketball for his league in 1962
- After high school he was offered an athletic scholarship in football from Ithaca, basketball from U.B., and baseball from Syracuse.
- Chosen Athlete of the Year at the Wellsville High School his senior year and went on to play basketball and baseball at the University of Buffalo
Terry Engelder

- He set or tied 13 school or meet records in three different track events: mile, two mile, & distance medley.
- In 1964 he set the school record in the mile event which stood for 41 years - 4:28 minute mile.
- In 1964 he was chosen as the Olean Times Herald Scholastic Trackman of the Year. That same year he held the Section V Two Mile Record.
- Accepted a track scholarship at Penn State where his cross country team won a medal at the ICAAAA Track Event.
- At Yale University his training partner was the world famous Frank Shorter who would go on to win a gold medal in the marathon at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
Doug McEnroe

- He is recognized as one of the very best track stars in the history of WCS.
- His leap of 21' 5 1/4 in the long jump is a track record that was set in 1963 and still exists 50 years later.
- Best known for his records in the long jump and the 440 Yard Dash in 1963. He won a Section V title in the 880 Yard Dash, his third favorite event.
- In 1963 he was chosen to be on the very first Times Herald track all star team. A group that featured only 11 athletes.
- In college at ECTI he continued his dominance in track by winning several prestigious meets, while enjoying an outstanding career.
- A leader of men, he was chosen to be the team captain in High School on his track and basketball teams, as well as his college track team.

- He is recognized as the greatest volleyball coach in the history of Wellsville sports.
- In girl's volleyball during a 26 year career he had a record of 403 wins against 131 losses.
- His girls' volleyball teams won 11 Section V titles which places him in the top five of all time.
- In 1994 his girl's volleyball team achieved the ultimate mark of excellence by winning the New York State title.
- In 16 years of coaching boys volleyball his coaching record was an amazing 229 wins with only 39 losses winning a Section V title in 1986.
**Rolly Miles
Class of 1966 (Friendship Central School)

- Rolly moved to Wellsville in 1985 and immediately became a popular figure in the community and school district.
- He served as the assistant coach for the varsity baseball program for 22 years. During that time the team won 367 games and captured 9 Section V Championships. While he never was the head of the program he certainly was the heart.
- Rolly was a variety basketball assistant for 6 years as well as serving on the Hall of Fame committee for the last 20 years. He was an original member of the Wellsville All Sports Booster Club serving as treasurer for 7 years.
- In 2009 he was inducted into the Allegany County Hall of Fame.
- Through his love of sports Rolly became a friend to so many. A true statement of his life.
Jim Stein

- Was a three sport star at Wellsville High School, excelling in football, basketball, and track.
- An outstanding athlete, he became a letter winner and state medalist in swimming at Syracuse.
- Coached at Wellsville High for 23 years in 11 different positions.
- A tremendous motivator that got the most out of the talent presented to him.
- At the Wellsville High School he coached 3 individual Section V Swimming champions and was a huge contributor to 3 Section V baseball champions.
- In 1981 he was recognized as the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year.
- For five years he coached the Alfred University Women's Swim Team to very successful seasons.
Dan Harris Jr.

- He was recognized as one of the best golfers in Wellsville School history as a 4 year starter.
- In 1966 he won the Steuben County Championship and was the runner up by one stroke in 1967 after calling a 2 stroke penalty on himself for hitting the wrong ball.
- In football Dan was recognized as a punishing two way starter as an offensive and defensive lineman.
- In golf at Hobart College he was recognized as a leader of men being selected team captain his senior year.

- In high school he won 9 varsity letters in the sports of baseball, football, and basketball.
- In baseball he was recognized as an outstanding hitter while playing the tough catching position.
- At Arizona Junior College he was selected to the All Conference Team twice while having a career batting average of .400.
- He was the starting catcher for Grand Canyon College when the team made it to the NAIA College World Series.
- In the summer of 1968 he was selected MVP of the Alle-Catt Semi Pro Baseball League.

- He was an outstanding athlete playing 3 sports in high school in soccer, basketball, and baseball as well as rugby while attending Cornell University.
- He is a member of the Andover High School Hall of Fame as well as in the Allegany County Sports Hall of Fame.
- Since he arrived in Wellsville in 1984 few people have given as much to so many. Part of a person's legacy is making a difference in their lifetime. Because of his generosity and love for sports, so many athletes young and old have had the opportunity to create a lifetime of wonderful memories.
- Stand up and be proud Charlie, you have touched the lives of thousands! It does not get any better than that!!
**Jim Sweet
Class of 1968

Sports Played: Tennis 4 Years
- A member of the Class of 1968, Jim Sweet played four years of varsity tennis.
- His countless hours of school and community service began in high school when he not only was a member of several clubs but served as the Sports Editor of The Owl, a WHS student newspaper.
- With his return from college, he quickly became a fixture as a coach for many years in Little League, the community soccer league, and as the high school boys' tennis coach.
- In 2000, Jim became the Sports Editor of the Wellsville Daily Reporter. He never looked at the position as a job but an opportunity to make our local athletes look like superstars.
- He often covered two or three local high school contests a day around the county and still found time to cover community leagues like horseshoes, bowling, summer soccer, small court basketball, little league baseball and Cinderella softball.
- Jim had a gift for writing, and he used this gift to touch the lives of many. Thank you, Jim, for allowing our athletes to cherish their moment in sports through your written word.
Kevin Harris

- He was Wellsville's very first Big 30 All-Star in football in the Fall of 1968.
- Recognized by many as the finest golfer to ever play for the Wellsville Lions.
- In 1968 he was the New York State Junior Amateur runner-up in golf.
- Played for Division I Syracuse University in golf in 1970 and 1971.
- Since college he has won an untouchable 13 club championships at the Wellsville Country Club.

- She is recognized as the most successful girls' soccer coach ever at the Wellsville High School.
- In coaching girls soccer for 25 years she had a career record of 265 wins with 160 losses & 19 ties.
- In 1993 her girls' soccer team won the Section V title beating Livonia 2-1. No other team in the history of Wellsville has won a Section V title in girls' soccer.
- When she retired from coaching in 2002 her 265 career wins ranked her 10th on the all time New York State coaching list.
- She will always be remembered as the ultimate role model for the athletes she coached. Wins were never more important than doing it with class.
