Digital Citizenship Lesson 2

  • This month we learned that digital citizenship does include physical activitie and balancing all aspects of our lives.

    15-20 minute sessions:

    PK-2nd

     

    • Discuss Health And Wellness – key talking points to lead discussion
      • How much time do you spend with your technology daily?
      • How long should you play on your iPad? Watch TV? Play video/computer games?
      • When was the last time you went outside to play or did something active in the house?
      • What does balance me?
      • How can we balance tech time, family time, school time and physical Activity?

     

    • calendar of activities will be sent home for the month of February.
      • The families will have a multitude of activities to do besides using technology.

    Discussion about Staying on Task and Cyber Bullying

    Talking points to lead the student discussion:

    • Staying on Task
      • What does it mean to stay on task?
      • Thinking about your teacher/class and your iPad, do you always stay on task?
      • Do you stay on the websites or apps that they teacher tells you to be?
      • Do you explore other apps or websites other than doing your work or paying attention?
        • Why?
      • Do you sneak on to websites or apps that your parents don’t know about?
        • Why?
      • What should be the consequence if you are not doing your work and playing on other apps or websites?

     

    • Cyber Bullying
      • What is a bully?
      • What is a Cyber Bully?
      • Have you ever been bullied?
        • How did it make you feel?
      • Have you ever bullied someone else?
      • Have you used an app or website to tease, mock or be mean to someone else?
      • Have you ever tried to put yourself in another person’s shoes?
        • Look at things from their point of view or perspective
        • How does/can bullying make someone else feel?
      • Should be build each other up or tear each other down?
      • What should be the consequences if I do bully someone using technology or face-to-face?
    • How do/can you show PRIDE when you use your iPad or other technology?
    • Take it a step further:
      • Have students create a skit or game using Scratch Jr about what they learned about Staying on Task and Cyber Bullying.

    Grades 9 -12 - February 12th - 9:20-10:00

     

    Coding Component

    • Discuss coding and what it is.

    Explanation:

    Coding is the basic computer language that makes all electronics and software work. It tells your devices how to do what you want it to do. Examples of Coding: Video Game Creation, Websites, Robotics, Apps, audio, visual, etc.

    Watch the Coding for Kids 1: What is Computer Coding? video as a whole group on your projector.

     

    • Apps on the iPads (Light Bot & Hopscotch they should be pushed to the student iPads by the 10th)
      • Using your Apple TV - project the Light Bot app as you work through the app as well. (HINT: Play Ahead of Time)
      • Introduce basic coding through a game format
      • These apps use the Blockly method of coding.
      • Blocky coding is a snap together puzzle piece form of coding.
      • Have students work through Light Bot to get a basic understanding of the process.
        • Have students work work at their own pace.
        • There is music in the background use headphones or turn volume off while they work.
    • Scratch Jr or Hopscotch – Students can explore more advanced aspects of coding
      • Free form coding app – more of an open format – start from Scratch
      • They design their own environment and characters
    • For further interest – share Code website and Khan Academy

     

    Digital Citizenship Component

    • ​​​​​​​Tie Digital Citizenship to Coding to create a short Digital Story

    • Discussion about Digital Law and Digital Privacy
      • Digital Law
        • What is a Copyright or Trademark? "Patents"
          • Basic Concept:
            • Ownership of intellectual property.
            • Intellectual property is the things you create (story's, art, music, ideas, etc.)
            • Official Registered Copyright and Trademark go through the Government.
            • Each type is protected by law, however registered ones are easier to prove.
        • Why is it important to give people credit for their work?
          • Plagiarism
          • Do you want someone else to take credit for your work?
        • If you change someone else’s work without citing it, is that legal?
          • You cannot change their work without permission
          • You can create your own interpretation of it, however you need to cite the original work.
        • How do you cite your sources?
          • Citation Tools:
            • Easy Bib
            • MS Word 2013+
          • MLA & APA
    • Digital Privacy
      • What is Privacy?
        • Things you do not want others to know.
        • Any personal information that the public does not have the right to know.
        • Freedom from undesired intrusion. (The American Heritage Student Dictionary)
      • How does that translate into the Digital Realm?
        • Do not post very personal information on social media.
        • Everything posted you lose all privacy, nothing is deleted and it is no longer private.
        • Even taking a photo on your phone and not posting it is still not private.
      • When it comes down to it, is Digital Privacy real?
        • NO
      • Using the Coding App Scratch  Jr or Hopscotch 
        • Student will choose a topic
          • Digital Law
          • Digital Privacy
        • Students will design characters (1-2) and an environment
        • Using their topic and App of their Choice
          • Students will create a Digital Story
            • Short skit/play to represent what they learned from the video and discussion using the apps.
            • Share it with your teacher and classmates. (HINT: use Apple TV to project)
